Glynis
Millett-Clay (nee Cock) of South Africa, traces her family history
directly back to Camborne in Cornwall.
Glynis's grandparents - William James Cock and Katie Cock (nee Tonkin) - emigrated
to South Africe in 1926, where
Glynis's father - and later Glynis - was born.
But
in fact the story of the Cock family of Camborne can so far be
traced as far back as the couple above, who were born about 170
years
ago William and Arabella Cock (nee Thomas). William J. Cock was
a Superintendent in the 'Old Bible Christian Chapel' as
well as being a Steward, local Preacher, Sunday School Secretary,
and a member of the local choir for over 60 years. It is also
known that he
was
a Local Preacher. When the Bible Christian Chapel closed down,
William James became associated with the Trelowarren Street
United Methodists Church in Camborne.
William James was also
one of the earliest shipping agents in town, but was a mason
by trade.
William James was the last survivor of the Camborne
Volunteer Company under Major W. Bickford. He was also one of the
first Volunteers
in the Camborne Fire Brigade under Captain Josiah Rowe. Both these
names were very well known in Camborne. It is believed that Josiah
Rowe later went to South Australia.
William James is also
believed to have been a wholesale merchant in food stuff, and
had a beautiful
home in Camborne which had a
greenhouse
inside.
He also kept pigs, horses (Landau and horses).
William James and Arabella had a son born in 1868 that they named
William John Cock, later to marry Lucy Thomas (a factory girl
from Bassett Street, Camborne). Shortly after the Boer War, William
John went
to see if there were any prospects in South Africa, but he
never
made
the
move
there. It was their son - William James Cock born in 1890 - that
emigrated to South Africa in 1923, with Katie and their daughter
Dorothy following in 1924.
If
anyone can help explain the middle name 'Tremecna' which was traditionally
used as the second christian name for
females in her family Glynis would be delighted
to hear from you.
