Cumbria, Keswick, Convention 1933

When I first thought about how I would lay out the website, I decided to order and file them by the traditional county names. In the case of Cumbria, which in 1974 was formed out of the former counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and parts of Lancashire and even Yorkshire, it would have been confusing to have left them in their traditional county names, therefore in this one case I have opted for the new county name of Cumbria. In fact it is not a new name, as the name Cumbria has been used for centuries, from Celtic days. The name derives from the word Cymru - the Welsh name for Wales, the land of the Celts.

Together we can build a wonderful archives of old images of the United Kingdom in order that generations yet to come may still enjoy them. This website, since its' launch in 2005, has probably become the largest old photographic website in the United Kingdom, and enjoys over 3 million hits a year, each one showing an interest in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
