Herbert Coates was born in Willington in 1874, his parents - John and Ann Coates - kept a printing shop in the High Street. When he grew up he became a local photographer, and carried on the tradition of a printing business and newsagents. Herbert passed away on the 30th of October 1960. Sadly many of his photographs were irretrievably disposed of by an Aunt, but some have been rescued by his Grandson David Coates. David has graciously allowed us to preserve for posterity some of the surviving photos, mainly on the Willington pages, but also on other County of Durham pages. Many of the Willington High Street photos show the Coates family shop.

If you have any old, vintage, historical, edwardian or victorian pictures of Durham, from the earliest days of photography, right up to the 1960's, then please do scan them for display and preservation on this site. Preferably either 1024 pixels in width, or for portrait style photographs 1024 pixels in height.
