Coal Mining Accidents in Gilfach.

Glamorgan, Gilfach Goch, Trane Colliery Ambulance and Nurse in
1910
Mining in the Gilfach Goch area began prior to 1868,
and the last coal mine - The Britannic - closed in 1960.
Mining accidents were prolific in the early days of coal mining
and the collieries of Gilfach Goch were little different, in most
cases profit came before concern for the welfare of the miner.
Here
is the story of one accident victim - John Price Evans - a collier
aged 69, and with 60 years service, who was killed on July 20th
1935. Tradition allowed miners who wished to attend the funeral
of a
workmate to
come to
the surface
one hour early, but just prior to the accident Powell Duffryn had
taken ownership of the mine, and put a stop to this practise.
Over two thousand mourners
attended the funeral of the late John Price Evans, who
had been tragically killed at the Trane
Colliery (Coal Mine). Seven hundred of his workmates - kept underground
till their shift had finished - had to attend the funeral with
their faces still black from coal, and their dirty clothes still
wet from the sweat of the day's work. The deceased man's son -
Alwyn Evans - who worked at the Askern Colliery, was told of the
accident at 12:30, but not allowed up until 2:00 o'clock!
The images of Gilfach Goch on this page are kindly shared with
us from the collection of
Mr. Wyndham Jones - a keen local historian and ex Coal Miner. Wyndham would like
to extend this credit to his contributors and friends - like Alison Morgan of
Sydney - for enhancing his collection.
