Like many of the coal mining areas of Wales, and elsewhere in the United Kingdom, the beauty and tranquility of the area returns soon after the closure of the mines, and Gilfach Goch is a wonderful example of the transformation from a dark, dirty and barren area, into a kaleidoscope of colour and natural beauty. Make no mistake about one thing though, many of us people from mining communities look back on the mining period with fond and proud memories, but we also know that the real price of coal was the lives and health of many of our ancestors.

Most of he images of Gilfach Goch on this page are kindly shared with us from the collection of
Mr. Wyndham Jones - a keen local historian and ex Coal Miner. Wyndham would like to extend this credit to his contributors and friends - like Alison Morgan of Sydney - for enhancing his collection.
