webmaster's note: One of my great grandfathers lived in Hirwaun during the 19th century, so it is reasonable to believe that he would have worked at the Tower Colliery, which opened in 1869. He later moved down to the Rhondda Valleys, where he spent the rest of his working life down the colliery.

Another of my great grandfathers - John Harris - was a colliery repairer, a particularly dangerous job, and he lost his life down the National Colliery in Wattstown; - he was aged 38 and left a widow and three young daughters, and another daughter was born soon after he died.
