Isle of Man, Ballacraine, The Ballacraine Hotel

Isle of Man, Ballacraine, The Ballacraine Hotel.

The above image of the Ballacraine Hotel is kindly shared with us from the collection of Paula Ziane, whose grandmother’s uncle - Alfred Anderton, whose name is above the door in the photo - once owned it.
Back in the days of Nelsons Navy, press gangs (charged with forcibly abducting men to staff the ships of the British Navy) operated on the Isle of Man, which one day led to what is referered to as 'The Battle of Ballacraine'. Ten Manxmen were drinking at the hotel when in walked a twelve strong press gang. The Manxmen left, only to be pursued by the press gang, which led to a fight resulting in one of the press gang being so badly injured that he subsequently died.

In 1937, the hotel was used for a scene in the comedy film ‘No Limit’ starring George Formby.
