In 1606, a little over 400 years ago, Dudley Lord North happened upon a spring which today is known as the Chalybeate Spring. He declared that the iron rich water was good for your health, and people flocked to try it. Tunbridge Wells became - and remains - a popular and fashionable place to visit.

The fashionable row of shops that followed, included tea shops, hotels, inns and gaming houses e.g. and these are still in evidence - known as the Pantiles, all accessed via a covered walkway.

In 1909, King Edward VII - because of its' popularity - endowed the prefix 'Royal' to the town name, and the name became Royal Tunbridge Wells. It is one of only two places in England thus endowed.

This website, since its' launch in 2005, has probably become the largest old photographic website in the United Kingdom, and enjoys over 3 million hits a year, each one showing an interest in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
