In 1606, a little over 400 years ago, Dudley Lord North happened upon a spring which today is known as the Chalybeate Spring. He declared that the iron rich water was good for your health, and people flocked to try it. Tunbridge Wells became - and remains - a popular and fashionable place to visit.

The fashionable row of shops that followed, included tea shops, hotels, inns and gaming houses e.g. and these are still in evidence - known as the Pantiles, all accessed via a covered walkway.

In 1909, King Edward VII - because of its' popularity - endowed the prefix 'Royal' to the town name, and the name became Royal Tunbridge Wells. It is one of only two places in England thus endowed.
