Lancashire, Atherton, Hillock Farm, Tom, Eva, Margaret, Harry,
Arthur and Anne Smith in 1908.
Margaret Smith - above - lived at Hillock Farm in Atherton with
her husband James Smith. After the death of her husband,
Margaret continued to live there with her children.
Her son - Thomas - worked in the local pit (coal mine), named
the Pretoria pit, which was struck by disaster in December
1910 (resulting in 344 fatalities), and the whole family ran
up
to
see if
he was ok. Fortunately, no-one was harmed in the part of the colliery
that Thomas was working in that day.
Thomas lost his life fighting in the British Army (probably
in the Lancashire Fusiliers) during WWI. His name is on the Atherton
War Memorial.

did not survive WWI.
After her son Thomas lost his life in the Great War, Margaret felt
she could no longer stay in the area, and married a farmer
named John Jones, moving to Hendomen Farm in
Montgomery.
The photos of Atherton are kindly shared with us from the collection
of Mr. Tim Lees - Great Grandson of Margaret Smith and Grandson
of Eva Smith - later Eva Lees.
