Monmouthshire, Abercarn, Early motor car in the canal - 1912

268 men and boys perished in the Prince of Wales Colliery (Coal Mine) disaster in Abercarn in 1878. Attempts at rescue were thwarted by fires below surface, and the mine had to be flooded - but it still took eight weeks to extinguish the fire, and over 30 million gallons of water.

The majority of images on the Abercarn page are kindly shared with us from the collection of Mr Norman Williams.
