Worcestershire, Wolverley, old photo of people fishing on Court
Wolverley Court Lock, nr Kidderminster, Staffs & Worcester
This is an absolutely delightful photograph of Wolverley Court
Lock on the Staffordshire and Worcester canal, a couple of miles
north of Kidderminster. Starring role must go to the view of the
lock-keeper’s cottage, with unusually tall chimney and roses
clambering around the door. Almost no signs of this cottage remain
at all today, except a slight hump in the ground just to the west
of the lower set of gates.
The bridge across the tail of the lock has changed too, but perhaps
only in detail. It is one of the rarer split bridges, allowing
the towing rope to be threaded through the gap between each half
of the arch. Over time most of these 18th century bridges have
either been replaced or, as here, strengthened. The original cast-iron
balustrade has gone, to be replaced by a simple steel bar railing,
and the gap in the middle has been braced.
Adding to the scene is a motley collection of people. There are
young lads fishing by the tail of the lock, and a woman and two
young men also fishing from the towpath opposite the photographer.
The man leaning on the parapet of the bridge has the look of a
lock-keeper, and the young man standing to the right looks to be
holding something that might be some of the photographer’s
equipment. There are references to “Ebury Photo” (the
publisher of this photograph) in the National Archives, but I can’t
find out anything more about this photographer.
